FMR Trail & Bridge Opening Event 2/13/13

Fitzgerald Marine Reserve’s California Coastal Trail Grand Opening Event will be Wednesday, February 13 at 10AM.  Meet at the FMR parking lot in Moss Beach.  After welcome and remarks by project partners (County and State Parks and Coastal Conservancy), guests are invited to explore the trail.

The trail has been closed since last October for grading for handicap accessibility, widening, paving, and a new bridge across San Vicente Creek. The late season start led to lengthy weather delays and stormwater runoff overwhelming erosion protection measures.  On 2/12/13, the Board of Supervisors is expected to approve contract changes authorizing a $32,000 cost overrun and extension of time to complete the project.

Harbor dredging & loss of Perched Beach coastal access

What will be the effect of placing 5,200 cubic yards of dredge material on the inner harbor’s Perched Beach during the impending launch ramp dredging?  Former MCC member Neil Merrilees, in a letter to Coastal Commission staff, describes the effects of this steeply banked new layer which will cover about two thirds of the beach as much as 7 ft deep, effectively blocking existing coastal access uses that the public has enjoyed, and leaving just a narrow low section at HMB Kayak stand.  This will be the third launch ramp maintenance dredging episode, and may bring most of Perched Beach up to the height needed for the Harbor District’s long-term goal of paving and development.
